KEY 1. Stone corbel 4. Hammer beam |
What is a hammerbeam? The hammerbeam roof was developed in the 14th Century to overcome the problem of spanning wide spaces. This was achieved by cantilevering the roof timbers from a beam projecting from the wall, avoiding the use of intermediate supports, which would obstruct the floor space. The most famous example of a hammerbeam roof is in Westminster Hall, London. However, to use such a form of construction in what is essentially a 'barn' is very rare and emphasises the importance of conserving Westenhanger Castle's 16th Century barn for the benefit of future generations.
